Move-Out Checklist

Moving out is more than just packing your things into boxes and loading them onto a truck. There are things you’ll need to do after you’ve moved out — some are customary, and others are required. Here’s what you need to do before you turn over the keys at closing:


Change of Address
  • Post Office: Give forwarding address.
  • Charge accounts, credit cards, and subscriptions.
Bank
  • Cancel any automatic payment or direct deposit arrangements.
Insurance
  • Notify insurance company of your new location for coverage: life, health, fire, flood, valuables, and automobiles.
Utilities
  • Gas, electricity, water, telephone, fuel, garbage, and cable/satellite TV.
  • Get refunds on any deposits made.
  • Leave any trash bins, or return them for your deposit.
Scheduled Deliveries
  • Laundry, newspaper: update address or cancel services.
Children
  • Register for school.
  • Transfer prescriptions (don’t forget the ophthalmologist or optometrist!)
  • Obtain birth records, medical records, etc.
  • Ask current doctor and dentist for referrals to new specialist
Pets
  • Consult a vet about moving your pet.
  • Plan for special care needs (medication, sedation, etc)
Don’t Forget…
  • Empty the freezer; plan your menu to use up the food so you don’t have to throw it out.
  • Defrost freezer and clean refrigerator.
  • Assemble first day items:
    • Soap
    • Toilet paper
    • Toiletries
    • Pencils and paper
    • Bath towels
    • Utility knife or scissors
    • Trash bags
  • Obtain relocation package from your real estate agent or Chamber of Commerce in your new city.
  • Arrange for storage ahead of time — it’s not uncommon for storage providers to be full
  • Find out about tax-deductible moving expenses.
On Moving Day…
  • Make a list of every item and box loaded onto the truck.
  • Carry jewelry and documents on yourself or use registered mail.
  • Double-check closets and drawers to make sure they are empty.
  • Turn off all appliances and lock all doors.
  • Turn in all old keys to your real estate agent.
At Your New Address…
  • Check off all boxes and items as they come off the truck.
  • Have all door locks replaced or re-keyed.
  • Check on service of gas, electricity, water, telephone, garbage, and cable TV.
  • Check pilot light on stove, water heater, and furnace
  • Ask mail carrier for mail he or she may be holding for you.
  • Update driver’s license.
  • Visit city offices and register for voting.
